I’m getting variable behaviour from different feed Readers for my syndication feeds. Bloglines doesn’t seem to be updating either feed correctly and is currently showing the RSS 1 feed as updated on June 16th and the RSS 2 feed as updated on 23rd June; I’ve mailed them to ask what might be causing this. Live Bookmarks in Firefox 1.0.4 on Windows doesn’t seem able to read the RSS 1 feed – it autodetects it but just lists it as empty, but it does read the RSS 2 feed. aKregator 1.0 on my Kubuntu laptop picks up both feeds perfectly.
Both feeds are dynamically generated and so will be as up-to-date as the front page of the weblog, and I’ve checked the current feeds at feedvalidator.org. At the moment, I’m not sending out a Last-Modified header with either feed. Both are served as application/rss+xml. I can’t think of anything else that might be relevant. Annoying.
Update: 14 July 2005
Bloglines is now indexing the site properly. They weren’t crawling my site at the time due to, err, a lack of subscribers. I had subscribed, unsubscribed and re-subscribed prior to posting this based on the assumption that when someone subscribed they’d immediately pull the latest feeds, but apparently they don’t so there’s a bit of a delay in the site getting re-indexed.
I’ve also noted that in aKregator posts seemingly randomly reappear marked as unread when there have been no apparent updates. I’ve not had the time to test this thoroughly or look for bug reports, though.
In case anyone’s interested, I’m currently using Bloglines as my main feed reader. The ability to access it from any machine is the main reason for this.
