Firefox 1.0 launch day!

Heh, it’s the launch for Firefox 1.0 today, and I haven’t been able to get though to the mozilla website all lunchtime. You’d have thought they’d have expected a bit of interest and laid on some extra bandwidth. Maybe they did, and yet interest has exceeded all their expectations.

Well, I really hope that interest is high – Firefox is a great product, and blows Internet Exploiter out of the water – but for the server to get slashdotted off the internet on launch day won’t look too good to any potential new users surfing on by.

(Obligatory conspiracy theory – it’s a Denial of Service attack orchestrated by Microsoft.)

(Aside – it’s nice to see the BBC covering the launch.)

Update (14:45): mozilla.org seems to be OK now, so get over there and get downloading!

More comment spam

This is getting ridiculous. I just deleted several hundred more comment spams by restoring from a week-old backup, so apologies if you’ve left a legitimate comment in that time. I just don’t have the time to be more selective right now.

I have some potential solutions in mind, but they require some coding to get working. In the meantime, you’re better off sending me email than leaving comments.

NO2ID Petition

NO2ID, an umbrella organisation campaigning against the government’s proposed ID card and National Identity Register scheme, are running an online petition which I encourage you to sign. The closing date is the 19th November, so don’t delay!

Even if you are not sure about signing this petition, please at least visit the NO2ID website and read through some of the arguments against the scheme to find out a bit more about the proposals. ID cards are more than just a threat to our civil liberties: there are serious questions as to whether the scheme will bring any benefits at all and the sheer cost in terms of both cash and inconvenience is staggering.
