The Guardian reports on the British National Party’s fielding of up to 220 candidates for the forthcoming local elections. The continued high profile debate over asylum seekers is obviously one of the reasons they expect to attract votes. The report says:
The scale of its activity should galvanise mainstream parties to battle against the apathy that has led to low turnouts and helped give the BNP recent poll successes.
Well, yes. But why aren’t they trying to combat voter apathy anyway? I still harbour the belief (that I’ve expressed here before) that the majority of people in this country recognise the BNP for what they are, and would not vote for them. Increasing turnouts will make it far more difficult for them to gain seats. Get to your polling booths!
